Z Relaxing Music – Powerful Art Form to Help You Fall Asleep

Music is a powerful art form, capable of making people happy or excited, calming and even making them dance. However, it can also improve their ability to fall asleep quickly.

Music can aid sleep by helping you feel calm and relaxed, and given music’s accessibility and potential sleep benefits, it might be a pretty good idea to try adding it to your nighttime routine.

Can music help you fall asleep?

Many children and adults need a little more than a quality bed and pleasant bedding to fall into a pleasant and deep night’s sleep. Parents know from experience that lullabies and gentle rhythms can help babies fall asleep, and science supports this. Fortunately, children aren’t the only ones who can benefit from bedtime lullabies. People of different age groups report better sleep quality after listening to relaxing music.

Using music has another advantage – it can shorten the time it takes you to fall asleep. A study conducted among women and men with symptoms of insomnia, were able to significantly shorten the average amount of time it takes them to fall asleep by listening to a favorite album near bedtime.

Why does music affect sleep?

The ability to hear music depends on a series of steps that convert sound waves that enter the ear and trigger electrical signals in the brain. When the brain interprets these sounds, a cascade of physical effects are triggered within the body. Many of these effects directly promote sleep or reduce problems that interfere with sleep.

Several studies indicate that music improves sleep because of its effects on hormone regulation, including the stress hormone cortisol. High levels of cortisol can increase alertness and lead to poor sleep. Listening to music reduces cortisol levels, which may explain why it helps calm people and relieve stress.

Music triggers the release of dopamine, a hormone that is released during pleasurable activities, such as eating, exercise and sex. This release can increase good feelings before sleep and treat pain, another common cause of sleep problems.

Listening to music can also contribute to relaxation by calming the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is part of your body’s natural system for controlling automatic or unconscious processes, including those within the heart, lungs, and digestive system. Music improves sleep by relaxing parts of the autonomic nervous system, leading to slower breathing, lower heart rate and reduced blood pressure.

Many people with poor sleep associate their bedrooms with frustration and sleepless nights. Music can neutralize this, distract from disturbing or anxious thoughts and encourage the physical and mental relaxation needed to fall asleep.

Noise at night, whether from roads, airplanes or noisy neighbors, can reduce sleep efficiency and is associated with a number of negative health consequences, including cardiovascular disease. Music can help drown out these environmental noises and increase sleep efficiency.
